Down Syndrome Awareness Month

DSAM: Mama Caroline & Bennett

Tell us a little bit about you and your family…

Hi! My name is Caroline, I’m 32 years old and currently live in Minnesota with my husband and 2 kiddos – Bennett (2.5) and Ruby (10 months)! We also have a 4-year-old English Bulldog named Ziggy.

We found out when I was 13 weeks pregnant that Bennett would be born with Ds and although it rocked our world, we didn’t realize how truly amazingly lucky we were about to become!

What’s the one word you would pick to describe Bennett?

It’s not one word but: full of life.

What do you want the world to know about Down syndrome? What has your loved one with Down syndrome taught you?

Don’t jump to conclusions. Focus on the cans, not the cannots. It’s easy to get lost in the fear of what might be instead of embracing it. Be positive, be supportive, be understanding, have faith, have hope, and have patience. Bennett is one of the absolute brightest lights in our lives. He has taught us more than anyone or anything else that there is nothing greater than being YOU.

What would you tell a parent who just received a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome?

Congratulations – welcome to the greatest club in the world!!! We are ALL here for you!

Oh, and send us pictures cause rockin’ kiddos are the CUTEST KIDS EVER.

What else should people know about Down syndrome?

Be the change you wish to see in the world. Changing perceptions about Ds, and any other differently-abled being starts and ends with each and every one of us. Education, support, love, and understanding can go a long way!
