Down Syndrome Awareness Month

DSAM: Mama Mallory & Ava

Tell us a little bit about you and your family…

My name is Mallory Roberts and my daughter Ava has Down syndrome! We live in Central Kansas in the beautiful town of McPherson. Ava is 4 (almost 5) years old. She loves trips to the zoo, music and dancing, family time and spending time with her “friends” aka classmates.

What’s the one word you would pick to describe Ava?

Life-giving (does this count as one word? 😂)

What do you want the world to know about Down syndrome? What has Ava taught you?

That it is not scary or a burden – so don’t say you’re sorry for someone. My daughter has taught me that difference can be just what you needed in your life even when you didn’t know you needed it!

What would you tell a parent who just received a diagnosis of Down syndrome?

Breathe. Take time to process. Then start living your new life! It’s going to be a beautiful one!

What else should people know about Down syndrome?

Life has been different than I’ve always imagined it. It has been harder and messier and more unpredictable than I ever thought it would be, but that is life. You can’t control or prepare for every little thing. Ava is just one facet of my life that hasn’t gone “to plan” but oh how God has provided! Not provisions to make life what I wanted or expected but in the little moments that make life good. He has been faithful in helping me to see that His plan is so much more beautiful than anyone I could dream up myself even with the unknowns thrown in.

How can people find you?
