Down Syndrome Awareness Month

DSAM: Mama Cecilia & Joseph

Tell us a little bit about you and your family…

My name is Cecilia Guizar. I am 23 years old. I live in Los Angeles, CA. My favorite hobbies are dancing, playing with my son, & hanging out with friends.

I have a handsome, smart & loving baby boy, Joseph, who is 3 years old. I gave birth to him on March 11, 2016 💙💛 He is such a beautiful, smart and kind boy. He brings so much joy and happiness to a lot of people’s lives.

What’s the one word you would pick to describe Joseph?

Ambitious.

What do you want the world to know about Down syndrome? What has Joseph taught you?

I want the world to know that kids with Down syndrome are more alike than different. They bring so much joy and happiness to people’s lives.

Just because you have a disability does not mean you can’t do it. It just means you need to give that extra push to accomplish anything. Down syndrome means you get extra love and support from everyone. Someone with Down syndrome can do anything they want. A disability doesn’t stop you but pushes you to try harder to accomplish more than a milestone.

What would you tell a parent who just received a diagnosis of Down syndrome?

Don’t listen to negativity. You are blessed and one of the chosen few to be a parent to someone with Down syndrome. It will bring so much joy and happiness to your life. Be prepared to feel that love and leadership role your child will make you feel. There is nothing down about that – just so much perfection.

Thank you, Cecilia, for sharing your words of encouragement. Joseph is a cutie and I think there are a lot of moms out there (especially those with a prenatal diagnosis) who need to read your words!
