Down Syndrome Awareness Month

DSAM: Mama Angie & Owen

Tell us a little bit about you and your family…

My name is Angie and I’m mama to Owen Steven who’s 3 years old. Owen has twin siblings who are 11. We live in Washington state. Our favorite thing to do together is giggle and dance! Owen just started early preschool and LOVES it!

What’s the one word you would pick to describe Owen?

GIFT.

What do you want the world to know about Down syndrome? What has Owen taught you?

It’s pure joy! Having Owen has changed my perspective on life. He lights up our world. His love is unconditional and his smile will steal your heart every time! Owen LOVES so deeply and teaches us to do the same. He positively impacts every life he encounters, especially his brother and sister ♥️

What would you tell a parent who just received a diagnosis of Down syndrome?

I had a prenatal diagnosis. To be honest, it shattered my world. I let fear take over. It was a journey, but it was only temporary. My faith in God carried me through and the gift on the other side was WAY more than I could have ever imagined. We are truly the lucky few!

What else should people know about Down syndrome?

While pregnant, people would either tell me “it will be ok” or they would say “I’m sorry”…as if something awful was happening. I’m here to tell you something AMAZING is actually happening! You will not understand it or relate until you look into those almond-shaped eyes. Accept this gift and allow it to change you, not scare you! You will never be alone in this journey! The community you will become a part of is like no other. Embrace your journey and Congratulations!
