Tell us a little bit about you and your family…
My name is Ashley and I am Paige’s mom. We live in Buffalo, New York with my husband Zach and Paige’s big sister, Ellie. Paige is 2.5 years old and loves things many kids her age enjoy: music, dancing, books, getting into mischief, and being silly!!
What’s the one word you would pick to describe Paige?
Determined.
What do you want the world to know about Down syndrome? What has Paige taught you?
The joy of celebrating the small things. Paige has given us the gift of enjoying every moment. She might take a little longer to reach some milestones. Paige deserves to have us celebrate every single little accomplishment, however big or small.
What would you tell a parent who just received a diagnosis of Down syndrome for their child?
Welcome to a huge, amazing family!! We have found an amazing local and online community to lean on for support!
What else should people know about Down syndrome?
Paige has been in a wonderfully inclusive daycare since she was 12 weeks old. She also attends a weekly gym class with typical peers. I think it’s so important to start inclusion at an early age. I believe that her peers are excellent role models for her in all areas including academic, behavioral and social.
Early inclusion increases the appreciation and acceptance of individuals with all types of differences. While it’s amazing to participate in activities within our local Down syndrome organizations, it’s important for her to be involved in activities with her typical peers.
I would not have thought so much about explaining the importance of inclusion to our 5-year-old if it were not for Paige. Ellie has already learned so much from Paige in just 2 years.
