Tell us a little bit about you and your family…
Hello! My name is Kyler, 33, happily married, and a dad of two, Bennett and Ruby. I’m a born and raised Minnesotan with east coast ties. After spending the last 10 years in Chicago, our family made the move back to the Twin Cities in May. We are enjoying this next chapter of our lives, especially the wonderful schools, resources, and networks now accessible to Bennett, our first-born and child with Down syndrome.
What’s the one word you would pick to describe Bennett?
Gamer.
Not only because that’s what we call his grandfather (long story), but because Bennett is a uniquely adaptable and confident individual no matter what setting he’s in. Runner-up would be transformational. Not only because of the way he’s changed my life since day one but the subtle and impactful ways he inspires people every day.
What do you want the world to know about Down syndrome? What has Bennett taught you?
One of Bennett’s favorite books is the Sesame Street-authored, “We’re Different, We’re the Same.” It explains that it’s important to respect and appreciate people’s differences, as well as to understand all the things we have in common. It’s a simple message, and I believe its ethos should be carried out into the world. Bennett has educated me in ways I don’t think anything else could have which is to respect every person, no matter what.
What would you tell a parent who just received a diagnosis of Down syndrome?
This flashbulb moment in your life will eventually lead to you becoming a stronger and better person, even though right now you feel completely helpless. It’s amazing once this precious thing arrives that you discover, “Oh, this is just a baby,” and the rest you will learn and pick up along the way. You will love nothing more than this kid.
